Emirates Airlines Resumes Flights to Phnom Penh, Boosting Cambodia's Air Connectivity

PHNOM PENH, May 3, 2024 — Emirates, the largest airline in the Middle East, has resumed flights to Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, via Singapore starting May 1, marking a significant boost in air connectivity that includes recent service additions by other major airlines.

Dr. Mao Havannall, Minister in Charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, expressed optimism about the resumption, noting it is likely to increase tourist and investor arrivals from the United Arab Emirates and the broader Middle East region. "The reconnection by Emirates is a vote of confidence in Cambodia's growing appeal as a travel and business destination," said Dr. Havannall.

Nabil Sultan, Emirates Executive Vice President for Passenger Sales and Country Management, commented on the strategic importance of the route. "Cambodia's rich cultural heritage and dynamic economy are significant attractions. This route not only opens up new tourism opportunities but also supports vital trade and commerce links between Singapore, Cambodia, and the UAE," Sultan stated.

Cyril Girot, CEO of Cambodia Airports, sees the reintroduction of the Emirates service as a gateway that enhances travel experiences to and from Cambodia. "This is a pivotal development for our tourism sector, improving accessibility and convenience for travelers heading to the Middle East and beyond," Girot explained.

This resurgence in air travel to Cambodia is complemented by AirAsia's recent launch of additional flights and Angkor Air's new direct route to India, collectively broadening Cambodia’s reach on the global stage. These expansions are seen as key drivers for the tourism sector, potentially increasing the number of international visitors and promoting cultural and economic exchanges.

"Emirates' renewed presence, along with new routes from AirAsia and Angkor Air, collectively spell a robust period for tourism in Cambodia, enhancing our connectivity with the world and inviting more explorers to experience the unique charm of our nation," added Dr. Havannall.

Emirates first initiated its flight service from Dubai to Phnom Penh in 2017 but suspended operations in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
